Discussion Option 1:
Newton’s 1st Law can be stated as follows-
An object in motion stays in unchanging motion unless acted on by a net force. And an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted on by a net force.
Our daily experience bears out the second part well. If an apple is sitting on the table, it will keep doing that unless I pick it up. But we generally don’t see things that move forever…
Let’s say Jill is playing hockey on a frozen lake. She hits the puck with the stick and it slides along the ice. Answer the following questions:
1. After she hits the puck, will it continue on forever? Why or why not?
2. Name all the forces acting on the hockey puck (after it was hit)
3. Think of three possible ways it would come to a stop- what makes it come to a stop in each case?
4. Respond meaningfully to two students in the discussion thread
